Located at 312 Washington Street near downtown, the library opened its doors at this location in 1895. During an extensive remodelling in 1922 a fire gutted the building. Fortunately most materials had been removed or placed in fireproof rooms and were spared.
Some of the items in the fireproof rooms were from the Frederick Remington Indian artifacts collection currently housed in the cross-street Remington Museum.
In addition to the various written and computer-based materials, the library also boasts three floors of local and locally connected artists' works.
Library Park is located directly behind the library. It boast a large greens, gazebo, The Soldiers and Sailors Monument and the Markert Memorial Gardens.
