purpose under the sun."
When early man stuck a straight stick
in the ground and noted its changing
shadow, he created on of man's first
scientific instruments. Over thousands
of years, trial and error methods even-
tually produced sundials of fair accur-
acy. It was not until the sciences of
mathematics and astronomy were devel-
oped during the Renaissance period
that accurate sundials were made. Sun-
dials makers (gnomonists) reached their
zenith in the early 19th century. THen
the advancing skills of clockmakers
replaced sundials. Today, time can be
measured to a millionth of a second,
however, our time is still based on the
sun's eternal paths across our sky.

"The Archie Lynn Chase Sundial is an equatorial polar dial. Unlike other monumental polar dials (designed by Erickson Monument Co), the dial face is more of a rounded square than a circular disk. Hours, half hours, quarter hours and five minute lines mark the time from 4am to 8pm. The hour lines are rotated for the site latitude. A steel gnomon rod about 3 inches in diameter casts the shadow. I have not been able to find information about who Archie Lynn Chase was. The area of the sundial was being renovated when I took the photos. I will try to get photos after the renovation. The sundial is on the school property, so please follow school rules when visiting. Parking may be found at N39° 37.715, W104° 52.895.
NOTE: Badspotteddog contacted me on October 14, 2017. He relates, "Badspotteddog says, Hello, I came across your post about the Archie Lynn Chase Sundial in Colorado. Your post said you did not have information on him. However, I do! Archie was a classmate of mine at Cherry Creek High School, and died from a snow skiing accident. There is a memorial page for him in my 1976 CCHS High School Yearbook. Just thought you would like to know."
