Frederick was born in Friesland around 780, a grandson of the Frisian King Radboud. Entering the clergy, by 816 he was the Bishop of Utrecht. Sometime between 834 and 838 he was stabbed to death, most likely by two men from an area that was very hostile to Frederick's preaching. Shortly after this Frederick was canonized. His feast day is 18 July and he is the patron saint of the deaf. St. Frederick was one of the patron saints of Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn who had the statues placed on this side of the bridge.
