Stone statue on a stone base mounted on the Old Main Bridge in Würzburg. The statue and base are about 15 feet high, the statue being slightly larger that life sized. Pepin stands, a scroll in one hand, looking out toward the far side of the bridge and the land beyond. he wears his armor and cape with a short sword at his left side. His crown rests atop his head.
Pepin the Short was King of the Franks and the father of Charlemagne. He was able to unite the Franks through a combination of his leadership and his military ability to conquer the various factions and then unite them under his crown. In doing this in 751 he became the first of the crowned Carolingian Kings and provided the basis for his son, Charlemagne, to unite most of Western Europe under the Carolingian Crown.
