The river rises in an area known as
The Silvery Slocan, an area which produced millions of dollars worth of silver and other metals at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. The river flows eastward 30 miles or so down from the mountains to empty into Kootenay Lake
In Kaslo's early years a dam was built on the river and water piped down to a hydroelectric plant in the city, producing electricity for the town.
Today hiking trails lead up the river from the town to a covered footbridge built just below the site of the old dam.
