Vancouver's Coal Harbour Fellowship Bell
This bell and the attached plaques have been engraved to honour those many companies and individuals who over the years of 1891-1979 were to make up the fabric of Coal Harbour's long history. As well, it is to remind the future generations of the self-contained, industrial marine community that developed on these shores from Vancouver's beginning.
This marine community was encompassed by Coal Harbour's south shore from Chico street to Broughton street and along Georgia.
Coal Harbour consisted of many services, from shipyards, engine and propeller shops, to all the other trades between. The work force was in excess of 2500 people during the Second World War. It was also known as being one of the safest harbours on the BC coast, and recognized nation wide for its expertise in construction and repairs to the major portion of Vancouver's fishing and tugboat fleets.
The bell itself was found during the dredging of the immediate area and was in possession of Mr Howard Leeming, whose family has donated it in his memory. The bell is to be used as a remembrance of Coal Harbor and those who gave it cause to be remembered.
