The guidebook instructs that: On the south side of the river is a CLIFF WALK, a narrow ledge high above the water, which winds around the shoulders of the hill until it reaches a shelter house at the top.
A fine growth of yellow pine crowns the ridges, while on the steep slopes and ravines leading down to the river is a mixed forest growth of hemlock, tulip, magnolia, oak, sweetgum, dogwood, and holly, the latter especially abundant and of large size. Azalea, rhododendron, spicebush, Stewartia, blueberry, St.-John's-wort, and strawberry bush are among the many plants.
---- KENTUCKY, A Guide to the Bluegrass State, 1939
The coordinates are for the parking of Trail #9, now known as Eagle Falls Trail, but likely includes the Cliff Walk mentioned in the travel guide. The trail follows the south side of the Cumberland River up and up to some rock shelters which can offer a great view of the main waterfall. The mountain laurel and pink rhododendron were seen blooming.
Warning: The elevation change for this trail is equivalent to eight stories of steps. It is not an easy stroll along the south shore.
