Historic and cultural city that was fire-bombed by the British on March 16, 1945 killing over 5,000 in the resulting firestorm. A grater percentage of the town was destroyed than was in earlier British fire bombing of Dresden. The old town has been rebuilt since the war. Home of Würzburg University where Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895.
