Plaque Text:
Mt. Allen El. 3111
Named In Honor Of W. Herbert Allen
This Plaque Presented By Exchange Club Of Los Angeles To Commemorate The Gift Of This Mountain To The Boy Scouts Of America
1965

Sandstone Peak is the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains with an elevation of 3,111’ (948m).
The Boy Scouts acquired the Circle X Ranch land from a generous donor W. Herbert Allen and named the mountain Mount Allen in his honor. In 1965 the Mt. Allen plaque and register were placed at the summit. (When the National Park Service acquired the Circle X land, they changed the name back to the previous name of Sandstone Peak, which is odd since the mountain is of igneous origin and there is no sandstone.)

To reach Sandstone Peak, park at the Sandstone Peak Trailhead on Yerba Buena Road. You can hike the 3 miles round trip directly to the peak and back or take the 6 mile loop along the Mishe Mokwa and Backbone Trails.

The 6 mile loop hike to Sandstone Peak is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains. There are breathtaking views from the summit of Sandstone Peak and Inspiration Point. There is over 1000’ elevation gain to the summit, so the hike can be strenuous.
