The Würzburg Cathedral was built over a number of centuries, these twin towers at the west front of the building date from the earlier times. Rectangular in cross section, they are exceptionally tall and close together. The Cathedral bells hang in them, one of which, the Lobdeburg-bell, dates from 1257. It had been removed from the tower in 1933 and survived the 1945 British fire-bombing attack on Würzburg that resulted in the destruction of much of the town and the cathedral.
