This segment of road was constructed in 1924-1925 as part of the Ozark Trail, a network of locally maintained roads running from St. Louis, MO, to El Paso, TX. In 1926, this portion of the trail was recommissioned as Route 66. The road was decommissioned in 1952 when a newer roadway was constructed just north of this road. Though no longer part of Route 66, this original roadway is still used for local traffic today.
Leaving the newer Route 66 on the east, one-tenth of a mile east of the historic Rock Creek Bridge, this segment travels 3.3 miles west, winding gently through rural, treed landscape. It crosses the bridge, travels along the railroad tracks adjacent to the North, goes under the railroad and on west until it reconnects with the newer road.
This original road was constructed by J. Gallamore Construction Company of Portland concrete. Eighteen feet wide, it was wide enough to comfortably handle the two-way traffic of that day. At some later point, portions of this roadway were covered with a thin layer of asphalt as a repair measure for the concrete road. Today, the original concrete can be seen under the worn asphalt (see photo gallery). The decking of the Rock Creek Bridge was unusual in that it was constructed of brick, and also later covered with asphalt.
