According to legend a man named Chapple discovered gold at Canoona near Rockhampton in 1858.
Inspector Read described Chapple as an extrovert character with an unusual taste in dress. He was short and bow-legged. Unlike most men of the day he was close shaved but had long black hair worn in ringlets. He wore a panama hat with a green veil,a scarlet blouse and enamel "Napoleons" with pants.
The mountain is named after this character.
