Sergeant Hiram Purcell was one of nine men who was awarded the Medal at Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31 and June 1, 1862. On May 31 while carrying the regimental colors on the retreat Sergeant Hiram Purcell returned to face the advancing enemy, flag in hand, and saved the other color, which would otherwise have been captured.
