The Civil War Centennial Commission of 1963 was very busy in the centennial year of the Battle of Gettysburg. There are all sorts of commemorative objects placed throughout the park to acknowledge so sublime an event. This stone bench is on the grounds of the 1st New Jersey Brigade Monument. The bench is rather ornate, appears to be made of polished granite and has a central dedication plaque on top of the bench/seat. The bench rests upon a cement slab. The inscription reads:
This Site Rededicated
July 1, 1963
CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL COMMISSION
State of New Jersey
Richard J. Hughes
Governor
The bench is located on the right or due east side of Sedgwick Avenue, up a hill and in the woods, 268 feet away from the road. A trail leads visitors up the hill to the vista/clearing created in 1902. I believe this area is called Weikert Hill. Parking is available at small, cutout shoulders along the road, some wide, some narrow. Be sure to stay off the grass or you will be ticketed by park police. I visited this monument on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 5:20 P.M. I was at an elevation of 583 feet, ASL. I used a Canon PowerShot 14.1 Megapixel, SX210 IS digital camera for the photos.
