750 pound, life sized bronze sculpture of the Cal Ply Mustang was unveiled in 1982. The mustang has served as a mascot for Cal Poly athletic teams and students since 1924. The statue was created by Cal Poly instructor Roy Harris. It stands atop a pedestal in small plaza right beside the University Union. A plaque on the base reads:
The symbol of the spirit of California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo was unveiled
April 23, 1982 during the Golden Anniversary Celebration of Poly Royal under the auspices of the
Cal Poly Alumni Association. The statue was sculpted by long-time Cal Poly animal physiologist
Roy M. Harris, a cowboy - turned professor -turned sculptor
