Operating since 1935 the Dunbar Theatre has long been a part of the Dunbar community. Many people grew up seeing Saturday matinees at this theatre. Sadly its fate is most like demolition in the next few years.

The Dunbar Theatre is another Vancouver neighbourhood movie theatre whose fate is most likely demolition in the next few years. In the 1970s and 1980s neighbourhood movie theatres existed in almost every community in the city. Names like The Varsity, The Ridge, The Hollywood, The Fraser, The Broadway, and so on. However as Vancouver's real estate value skyrocket -- for example in this neighbourhood a single family house could sell for $16,500 in 1964 and today just the land value is worth about $1,500,000 -- there is a trend to turn every possible square foot of land in a high density condominium project.
Sadly the Dunbar is on such a site. The current owners want to tear down the theatre and perhaps the entire commercial frontage to develop into a commercial and residential complex. But the focal point of the community's entertainment would be lost in the process.
This is one of two neighbourhood neighbourhood movie theatres left in Vancouver and the question is when will it become none.
