Popeye is recognized by the older generations around the world for his trademark corncob pipe and ubiquitous can of spinach. This cartoon character of the comic strip and later animated cartoons was created by Elzie Crisler Segar, a native of Chester, in 1929. Popeye has been motivating children to eat their spinach ever since.
