The Swan River is not the longest river in the Australian State of Western Australia (that honour belongs to the Gascoyne River), but it has played a major role in the history and development of the State. The River begins 60kms inland near the Walyunga National Park. It then gently flows to the south-west, passing through the State capital of Perth City, then continues on to the Perth's port city of Fremantle, where the River flows into the Indian Ocean.
The River was first identified by Europeans in 1697, when the Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh visited the area. He named the River for the famous Australian black swans, who made their home on the River. After that time the region was successively explored by various European powers. In 1829 a combination of factors caused the first batch of English settlers to step forth onto the shores of their new home. From then to now the River has always been part of the social and economic life of the people of Perth and Fremantle.
The waymark location is on the southern promontory of the River, near a small lighthouse. This can be reached without restriction on foot or car from Fremantle. I chose this site, rather than the northern as this spot is a popular photography location, where ships entering the harbour can best be observed. Nearby is Fremantle Harbour.
