The history of Cosmopolis provides that this is the location where in 1855, Governor Isaac Stevens called a conference with the area Indians on the banks of the Chehalis River to initiate treaty negotiations between the territorial government and the Coast Indians which included the Chinooks, Chehalis, Quen-ai-ult, Quaitso, Satshop, upper Chehalis, Cowlitz, Quinault and Quileute tribes. The gathering was inconclusive (no treaty was signed until 1856). Development of the area began in June 1861 when the streets were laid out, and by 1860 there was a brickyard, 1961 a tannery, 1879 a grist mill, 1888 a saw mill. In 1891 the town was incorporated.
Today, the town boasts 1,643 residents, a police department, volunteer fire department, 6 parks including a Community Garden and two soccer fields.
The word Cosmopolis means "city of the world", but the local residents refer to the town as "Cosi".
