This monument recognizes the twinning relationships between the Province of Alberta and various provinces and states around the world. These twinnings promote friendship and cross-cultural understanding through economic ties, economic exchanges and joint initiatives. The Province of Alberta has entered into a formal twinning relationship with each of the provinces and states named on this monument. The first was signed in 1974. Twinning relationships include full-fledged, multi-facted "sister province" relationships, as well as economically focused cross-border partnerships with American states.
