The plaque reads:

[Low relief bust of John Hand]

John W. Hand, Jr.
1948-2004

"Visionary" "Motivator" "Innovator" "Renegade"

A Denver native, entrepreneur John Hand was a founding member of Capitol Hill United Neighbors and an active participant in Colfax on the Hill's revitalization of Colfax Avenue. The Capitol Hill People's Fair was Mr. Hand's vision, and he was a key early organizer of the fair. Mr. Hand's real estate investment company purchased this historic building in 1977. He transformed it into an antique store and small deli and then, in 1987, into Colorado Free University, Denver's premier lifelong learning center. To Mr. Hand, the building was a Denver treasure and a cornerstone of the Colfax Avenue renaissance.
