This is one of the first pieces of equipment used to pack hay into rectangular bales instead of piling it into large loose stacks. It was mobile and could be moved from location to location, but was belt driven from another piece of equipment and so it had to remain stationary while in operation. Hay had to be brought to the baler and then loaded into it by hand. A far cry from later equipment that could be operated while moving and could mechanically pick up hay that had been raked into windrows.
