The Place: Mott Gym was inaugurated in September 1960 and hosted its first match on 1 December 1960, a Cal Poly Mustangs men's basketball game against Whittier College. Cal Poly prevailed 70-69. The facility underwent major renovations in 1998 by local construction firm Santa Margarita Construction Corp. The seating was completely redone and arena-style chairbacks were added to Mott Gym in addition to upgraded heating and ventilation systems.[1] Mott Gym also contains the Cal Poly Mustangs trophy case, as well as the Mustang Hall of Fame. For the Cal Poly athletes, men's and women's locker rooms were renovated in 1999 and Mott Gym also houses the Mustang Strength Complex, the Cal Poly Athletics Academic Resource Center, and offices for Cal Poly coaches. The Person: Robert A (Bob) Mott earned a bachelor degree at the University of Akron in 1938. He finished his master of science degree at the University of Southern California in 1946. In that same year he became the head of physical education at Cal Poly and was highly regarded throughout the state university system for his knowledge and experience in building physical education into the curriculum. His keen insights provided the basis for a strong, broadbased Cal Poly physical education program that clearly defined the role of intercollegiate athletics. He was an educator recognized for his professionalism, loyalty, devotion and humanitarianism. He touched the lives of students and colleagues alike. Bob served as physical education department head and head baseball coach. He was responsible for the organiziation and direction of the coaching/physical education workshop held at Cal Poly annually since 1946. In 1952, he received his doctorate of education at Stanford University. In 1961, he was a member of Governor Brown's Youth Fitness Commitee. From 1964 to 1965 he was the coach of the National Basketball team in Zambia. Source
