Whaling in the Azores began approximately around 1830, first with American whaling boats, which came here to hunt for sperm whales until the end of the 19th century. After this, the activity was then continued at the initiative of the island’s own inhabitants, who ventured forth to sea in narrow rowing-boats (Canoas).
This monument commemorates the whalers and whaling tradition on the island of São Miguel. It stands in front of the Parochial church of Nossa Senhora da Apresentação in the main square of Capelas, opposite the Polivalente (community centre). In the basin of the fountain stand two life-sized harpooner and swims a - of course not live-sized - sperm whale. As the plaque says, the fountain was build in 1994 by the Parish Council of Capelas and the Regional Government of the Azores:
