The Place: Known as "The Pilling", the Frank E Pilling Building houses the Cal Poly computer science department as well as computer services. The 50,000 sq ft building was completed in 1969. It is a masonry and glass curtain wall exterior building in the Late International Style. Originally named the Computer Science Building, it was renamed the “Frank E. Pilling Building” in 1994 in recognition of Mechanical Engineering Alumnus Frank E. “Bud” Pilling's generosity and support.

The Person: Cal Poly alumnus Frank E. "Bud" Pilling, attended Cal Poly on the GI Bill, graduating with a mechanical engineering degree in 1950. After graduating, he rose through the corporate ranks, primarily at Borg-Warner, to become president of the company's Automotive Group. Over the years Mr. Pilling, along with his wife have been generous benefactors of the college, wanting current and future generations of students to have, among other other things, the opportunity to continue the Cal Poly projects based learning experience that he had.
