The Place:
Students know the Dexter Building because it fronts Dexter Lawn, a popular gathering spot on warm days. Built originally in 1948 as a library, it has California mission style architecture. No longer a library it now houses the Military Sciences Department.

The Person:
It was named for Walter F. Dexter, who as California Superintendent of Public Instruction helped then college president, Julian McPhee, to get approval and state funding for a new library building. Dexter also served as President of Whittier College and the President Lions Club International.
