This Catholic church building was dedicated in 1996 and is the fourth building in the church's history; the third, erected in 1923, was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1993 (the "
Spring Break Quake"), leading to its demolition in 1995.
Established in 1875, the Sacred Heart Church of Gervais was formed when the Gervais parish separated from the nearby St. Louis parish. The two parishes existed separately for more than 100 years. In 1991, they reunited and when Sacred Heart's pastor asked for a copy of the decree establishing the new, combined parish, archdiocese officials discovered that the 1875 separation had never been decreed, so a new decree was not necessary as "what had never been decreed to be separated needed no decree to be reunited."
The church also operates the Sacred Heart Catholic School, providing education for Kindergarten through 8th grade.
