City Hall and municipal offices located on George Street in downtown, Peterborough, ON.
The city of Peterborough, population approximately 80,000, is situated on the Trent and Otonabee Rivers in central Ontario. Its proximity to a navigable waterway, combined with a source of power and rail connections resulted in its growth and dominance in the local manufacturing and transportation industries in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Today, the city boasts a university and a community college, Peterborough Health Centre, one of the province's largest, and several major manufacturing plants such as Quaker Oats and General Electric.
The current buildings were assumed by municipal authorities in the 1970's when the previous facilities proved to be too small for the growing municipality.
