Quoting the information board at the sundial:
"This sundial was created by the artist Ray Brooks using hand-made bricks
from Bulmer Brick and Tile in the north of Essex. They have been carved by
visitors to the Cressing Temple Festival in July 2000.
Most sundials have an angled metal pointer called a 'gnomon' to cast the
shadow which shows the time. This sundial is different; when you stand on
it your shadow shows the time.
To find the time, stand on the brick path in the centre and position yourself
on the current month, which you will find carved in the bricks.
Stand with your back to the road, so that the sun is to the south behind you.
Your shadow will then show the correct time. The sundial is set to British
Summer Time so it will be an hour ahead in the winter months."
The sundial is set in the area to the west of the main visitor entrance, and to the east of the long range which includes the cartlodge and granary.
