“The former Bank of Montreal was built in 1908-1909 and stands as the last example of a series of secondary bank branches dating from the turn of the century’s commercial and residential expansion of Centertown.
After serving as a Bank of Montreal Branch until 1973, the bank was left vacant until 1978, when it was converted into the Bank Street Café on April 27, 1991.
The Beaux-Arts limestone and brick structure was designed by prominent architect Keefer and Weeks. Significant architectural elements include an elaborate entablure and modified Doric columns framing the door, three windows, and a rounded corner entranceway.
The Toronto Dominion Bank at the corner of Sparks and Bank Streets is the only other bank in Ottawa to feature a corner entrance. The latter, however, was designed as an office building.”
