"O Pelourinho de Rates situado diante da antiga casa do concelho de Rates, é um pelourinho mandado erigir por D. Manuel I, no século XVI. Rates acabou por perder o estatuto de concelho que o pelourinho simbolizava e foi integrado no concelho da Póvoa de Varzim em 1836.
Este pelourinho foi classificado pelo IPPAR como Imóvel de Interesse Público pelo decreto 23 122, DG 231, de 11 de outubro de 1933. O pelourinho é constituído por um soco de três degraus circulares bastante altos, embora o térreo seja formado por blocos desconjuntados.
O capitel é um bloco cilíndrico, encimado por anelete rebordante. O conjunto, ao contrário de muitos pelourinhos reconstruídos, parece ser quinhentista."

"The Pillory of Rates situated in front of the former home of the county of Rates is a pillory erected by D. Manuel I in the sixteenth century.
The pillory was classified by IPPAR as a Public Interest by Decree 23 122, DG 231, of October 11, 1933. The pillory is constituted by a circular punch of three steps quite high, even though the floor is formed by blocks disjointed.
The capital is a cylindrical block, topped by annulet rebordante. The assembly, unlike many pillories reconstructed seems sixteenth."
