This building is one of many contributing buildings that make up the West Miner Street-Third Street Historic District. There is a historical marker that hangs in front of the Witherill Building on the corner of S Oregon St and historic W Miner St. There are numerous older buildings along Miner Street that contain historical markers that relate the history of each building, a few mentioning Yreka's great fire of 1871. This historic building's marker reads:
Witherill Building
331, 333 W. Miner St. The damage to this building in the great fire of 1871 was only $100, no doubt a result of its brick construction. Built by Abel Witherill in 1859 (the same year Yreka was illuminated by gas light), an assortment of short-lived businesses operated on the site until the Yreka Journal moved here in 1883. This generally Republican oriented newspaper published at this location until 1915 when the Siskiyou News bought the building. The News moved 26 years later, and Witherill's building became a warehouse for a time before it provided space for several retail businesses including a steak house and fabric store. Today, the strong architecture of this Miner Street front depicts the strength and romance of the era in which the building was built.

I located a nice article on the history of the Witherill Building here. The west half of the building was known as the Winkler Building, the east half as the Witherill Building.
Yreka has a few websites devoted to preserving its rich history. Siskiyouhistory.org is a good place to start and breaks up the town's history into groups of years. Yrekapreservation.org contains some nice pictures of original homes and commercial buildings from yesteryear. Finally, Yrekahistory.blogspot.com is a good blog website which contains great stories and events of Yreka's past and all their articles have been archived.
