This building is one of many contributing buildings that make up the West Miner Street-Third Street Historic District. There is a historical marker that hangs in front of the Bella Union Saloon building on historic W Miner St. There are numerous older buildings along Miner Street that contain historical markers that relate the history of each building. This historic building's marker reads:

Bella Union Saloon
325, 327 W. Miner St.

Sam Lockhart owned this property in 1852 and leased it to a gentleman who ran the Bella Union Saloon for a time. When German-born Charles Iunker and Louis Rapi became new owners in 1859, they prided themselves on service, superior liquors, and elegance of appointments. Iunker later operated a brewery on Oregon Street producing around 7,500 barrels of beer annually. He was an energetic and enterprising man dedicated to the advancement and prosperity of Yreka and Siskiyou County. The Bella Union building was replaced in 1861 by a two-story residence, but continued to provide space on the ground floor for a variety of businesses.

I located a nice article on the history of the Bella Union Saloon here. It is interesting to note that although the historical marker doesn't mention it, this building was a temporary home as Grace Hospital in 1916 when local high school students moved into a neighboring hospital, Mt Shasta Hospital, after the county high school burned down.

Yreka has a few websites devoted to preserving its rich history. Siskiyouhistory.org is a good place to start and breaks up the town's history into groups of years. Yrekapreservation.org contains some nice pictures of original homes and commercial buildings from yesteryear. Finally, Yrekahistory.blogspot.com is a good blog website which contains great stories and events of Yreka's past and all their articles have been archived.
