This building is one of many contributing buildings that make up the West Miner Street-Third Street Historic District. There is a historical marker that hangs in front of the Henry Egbert Building on historic W Miner St. There are numerous older buildings along Miner Street that contain historical markers that relate the history of each building, a few mentioning the great fire of 1871 that swept through downtown Miner St. This historic building's marker reads:
Henry Egbert Building 320 W. Miner St. Construction date of this building is unknown, but the New England Bakery and Temperance House was operating here as early as 1855. With a typical "false front," the sidewalls are common to adjoining structures, but the building's width often accomodated two businesses. Shade trees were planted in front in 1871. One partnership, which added wallpaper and elegance to the interior, served coffee and hot toast every morning at six a.m. Eventually the numerous bakery businesses, saloons, and grocery stores vanished, but the Yreka Seed and Grain Company moved in and served the community for many years before the space was converted to an appliance store.

I located a nice article on the history of the Henry Egbert building here. It's interesting to note that when I took pictures of this building, the owner has removed the facade on the front to reveal the former Yreka Seed & Grain Store name. You can compare my picture to the one on the blog site link above. It's interesting what you can uncover when you remodel/update a building. This building currently remains empty.
Yreka has a few websites devoted to preserving its rich history. Siskiyouhistory.org is a good place to start and breaks up the town's history into groups of years. Yrekapreservation.org contains some nice pictures of original homes and commercial buildings from yesteryear. Finally, Yrekahistory.blogspot.com is a good blog website which contains great stories and events of Yreka's past and all their articles have been archived.
