This is a satue of Tomé de Sousa that was was the first governor-general of the Portuguese colony of Brazil from 1549 to 1553.
The satue is mounted on a stone pedestal where you can read:
"A Tomé de Sousa Natural de Rates 1º governador geral do Brazil entre 1549-1553, Fundador da cidade de S. Salvador da Baía, 1º Comendador de Rates. Homenagem da Junta de Freguesia e do Povo de Rates 10 - Junho - 1989"
"To Thome de Souza Born in Rates 1st Governor General of Brazil between 1549-1553, Founder of the city of San Salvador da Bahia, 1st Comendador of Rates. Homage of the Junta de Freguesia and the People of Rates 10 - June - 1989"
Tomé de Sousa"Tomé de Sousa (1503-1579) was the first governor-general of the Portuguese colony of Brazil from 1549 to 1553. He was a nobleman and soldier born in Rates, Póvoa de Varzim. Sousa was born a half-breed noble and participated in military expeditions in Africa, fought the Moors and commanded the nau Conceição to Portuguese India, part of the armada of Fernão de Andrade."
