Birdicus Gigantium is the latest creation of sculptor James Kitchen to be installed on permanent display in and around downtown Springfield. James Kitchen specializes into welding scrap metal into art.
The work is a 36' tall steel sculpture of a giant wading bird with a curved bull resembling an ibis. The sculpture rests on an 8' square tiled concrete pad and supported by four guy wires bolted to the pad.
In an interview James Kitchen describes the inspiration for the sculpture. “When Springfield was first settled, where we're standing is a marsh. There would have been cranes and birds here and this kind of ties that in”.
