The Ermida de São Mateus da Costa is located in in Santa Luzia, a civil parish in the municipality of São Roque do Pico. The construction of the chapel, build of blocks of black volcanic rock, dates back to the 17th and 18th century. It stands beside the old path along the coast.
The Ermida de São Mateus is a rectangular building, with sacristy and a small bell tower, attached to the front left side. The façade of the chapel has a door with carved stone lintel, the apron of the door has a simple décor and an inscription (unreadable). The door is flanked by stone blocks, carved and decorated, like the entire main façade has stone blocks with bas-reliefs with geometrical motifs. The pediment is surmounted by a cross.
In front of the chapel, there is a small enclosure with low wall and steps in front of the path.
