Golden School - Golden, MO USA - Former Schools on Waymarking.com

This school is in the old part of what had been the town of Golden. When Missouri built its route 86 a mile south of town, everything moved to that area, as so often is the case; leaving only this old school, a church, and a couple of houses. However, the school building is now used as a community center where a fiddle contest is held, as described in this 2006 newpaper article.

It is difficult to find history of anything on the web because searches are biased toward giving you current information, even if the search starts with History or Photographs. The first 10 pages or so give information "how to get there" and where are the nearest hotels! But I managed to find this 1897 rootsweb page containing the names of students who had maintained a 90% or better average; as well as this 1912 photo on rootsweb of some of the students. This rootsweb page has links to several class photos outside the school.

Notice from all of the old photos that the school had wooden siding. It is unknown when the building was resided with stone or rebuilt. From this 1909 plat map one can see how the road to and around Golden is very different from the map of today, in which MO-86 was put through south of the old town, carrying the businesses and homes with it.
