James’s dog, Dan, is getting on a bit and James is putting off the decision to put the dog down. Siegfried offers to do the job, but James declines. Matters are finally settled when James takes Dan out for a walk and Dan has a heart attack and dies. James takes to walking by the river in an attempt to get over the loss.

The bank of the Gill on the right has changed considerably since filming. A retaining wall has been built to support parking for the houses at the side of the Gill. The lady in the first house related how the village had a make over for the filming. TV aerials were removed and the house in the background had its windows taped to give faked panes.

The choice of West Scrafton as a location is apt, as Alf Wight, the real life Mr Herriot once lived in the village.
