Mrs Pumphrey is concerned that last year's vegetable show did not go well and that locals believe the judging to be suspect. Mrs pumphrey, with the help of her bank manager, has devised a random number scheme to preserve the anonymity of the produces owner at the judging. She asks James to be the judge with the bank manager’s assistance.
On the appointed day James judges, but the system doesn’t work as expected. Hodgkin wins several of the prizes and there are many mutterings from the villagers. It doesn’t help when Mrs Pumphrey gives James a hamper for being Judge. Lord Hulton’s men wait outside and tell James that they don’t know how he did it, but that it was clever!
