Located in the northeastern corner of Colorado, Julesburg has an interesting history that includes cowboys and Indians, the Pony Express, and the transcontinental railroad. Several of these items are featured on the welcome sign as you enter from the west on US 138/385.

Julesburg was named after Jules Beni, an outlaw involved in shady dealings and robberies on the stage line he managed. The stage company hired Jack Slade, a brutal gunfighter, to replace Beni. After being ambushed and shot by Beni, Slade recovered and eventually killed his rival, cutting off both ears and keeping one as a souvenir. Due to its population of horse thieves, gamblers and outlaws, the town was once described as the wickedest city in the West. The present town of Julesburg is actually the 4th settlement to bear this name, the others having been destroyed by fires and Indian raids.
