A 1.5 mile dirt trail leads travelers to the base of the west Pawnee Butte in the heart of Pawnee National Grassland (see
WMH6P8). The second butte is located on private property but may be accessed unless otherwise posted. There is little to no shelter on the trail, so bring a hat and plenty of water and sunscreen. Temperatures quickly rise above 100 degrees in the summer months. Spring and fall are the most popular seasons and early morning or evenings provide the greatest chance to spot native wildlife. Follow posted signs as certain areas, including the overlook, are closed from March to June to protect nesting hawks, eagles and falcons. There are several Geocaches nearby including one from 2001 that is still in excellent condition.
The trailhead provides parking for cars and trailers and includes covered picnic areas and toilets. It is open year round and there is no fee. For detailed information, visit the website [visit link].
