Mahatma Gandhi - San Diego, CA - Etched in Stone on Waymarking.com

There are two quotations on the walls encircling the courtyard of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. The words are presented on raised letters applied to the walls.
One quote, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”, is attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, although an online search reveals that this quotation, although always attributed to Gandhi has an unknown origen.
The second quoatation is my Bradley Miller- “Teaching a child not to step on a caterpillar is as valuable to the child as it is to the caterpillar.”
Although the source for the second quotation has not been discovered by the poster of this Waymark, it's attribution to him does not seem to be questioned.
