The small town of Ashfield has a striking monument in honor of its citizens who lost their lives during the Civil War. A 10' high by 4' by 2' marble sculpture of a Union soldier, by an unknown artist, is depicted looking straight ahead while standing at parade rest. The soldier is wearing a cap, knee length coat and cape. He is wearing a kit on the left side of his belt and is holding a rifle vertically in front with both hands on the barrel, left over right. His left foot extends over the edge of the marble plinth.
The multi-tiered base is about 12 feet high by 6' wide by 4' deep. The lower part two tiers are made of gray granite. The upper two tiers are made of pink granite. The top pink tier has the names of those who died in the Civil War:
