Archaeological excavations show that there was already a fortification on the site even before the Roman period. Around 201 B.C. the Romans conquered Silves and transformed and renewed the existing fortification for there own use. In the 8th century, the citadel was conquered by the Moors and reinforced. The walls and towers that represent todays castle date to the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1755, the castle was damaged by the Lisbon earthquake and later rebuild.
