Located near the top of the north end and below a pediment of the
Stanley Mosk Library & Courts Building and etched in stone is a poetic adapation by the former English poet, Sir William Watson and reads:
INTO THE HIGHLANDS OF THE MIND LET ME GO
This adaptation was taken from a poem titled Shakespeare that was part of a larger body of work titled A Hundred Poems and from which the full poem reads:
SHAKESPEARE
OLET me leave the plains behind,
And let me leave the vales below
Into the highlands of the mind,
Into the mountains let me go.
My Keats, my Spenser, loved I well ;
Gardens and statued lawns were these ;
But not for ever would I dwell
In arbours and in pleasances.
Here are the heights, crest beyond crest,
Loftiest of all things cloud-encurled :
And I will watch from Everest
The onsweep of the surgeful world.
The Person:There is a nice bio of Sir William Watson on
Wikipedia.org here. Watson was considered a very controversial poet because of his political views that he utilized in his poems against many celebrity figures in Europe during the time. His personal views on politics cost him during his professional life and he died a poor man, leaving his wife little to the point that she had to seek employment.
