A 10.25' high bronze sculpture of a Civil War color sergeant is standing upright while holding a flag on his right side with both hands. He is wearing a moustache, cap, and short jacket. A sword hangs from his left hip. The statue was sculpted by Launt Thompson.
The pink and gray granite base is 15' high by 5.25' square. Around the top it is adorned with wreaths and garlands. The west side has a dedication and a bronze relief plaque with the United States coat of arms. The east side has a dedication and a bronze relief plaque with the Massachusetts coat of arms. The north and south sides have bronze plaques listing the names of citizens from Pittsfield who died in the Civil War.
The monument was sponsored by the Ladies Soldiers Aid Society who raised $3,000 and the City of Pittsfield who appropriated $7,000. The memorial was dedicated in September 1872.
