Coaching in Bavaria

Page 154 of "1000 Places..." suggests two adventures: taking a stage coach across Bavaria and visiting Bavaria's fairy-tale-castle Neuschwanstein.

Originally the coach wasn't part of our plans, but heavy rain made us drop our hiking plans and take the 2-horsepower-carriage at least for the last stage of our approach to the castle.

While the suggested two day coach trip costs above €200, the very last part from Hohenschwangau to Neuschwanstein (you've got to love those German names) is only €6. Add €12 admission to the castle to it.

The Carriages to the castle leave at the ticket center at Alpseestrasse in Hohenschwangau.

From the ticket center, we took a first look at the castle, peaking through the mist (above).

.
Yes, the rain was really bad (above), but the scenery was spectacular! (below)

The last part of the ride took us through a lush green forest (left).

Soon, we arrived at the drop off point, close to the castle (below).

Neuschwanstein Castle is not as historically significant as some of the other, larger German royal residences, but it is without a doubt Germany's most popular castle - and one of the most beautiful ones too.

The 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as a homage to composer Richard Wagner. Construction began in 1869. The castle was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886.

Since the castle was opened to the public, over 60 million people have visited it .The palace, towering on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau, also appeared prominently in several movies and was the inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle.
