Located near the top of the south end and below a pediment of the Jesse M. Unruh State Office Building and etched in stone is a poetic excerpt by the former poet and librarian, Sam Water Foss and reads:
BRING ME MEN TO MATCH MY MOUNTAINS
This excerpt was taken from Foss's literary work titled The Coming American written on July 4, 1894 and from which the full excerpt reads:
"Bring me men to match my mountains, Bring me men to match my plains, Men with empires in their purpose, And new eras in their brains."
The Person:There is a nice bio of Sam Water Foss on
Wikipedia.org here. Foss was not known in the poetry circles as a major poet but he was able to represent the 'common man' in the daily poems he would write and created some memorable works nonetheless. The quote on this building has been utilized by other people, most recently in a
song (which I love, BTW) by the female artist
Lamya.
