The Place:
The town of Aumsville was established in the 1860s, centered around the Turner family farm and flour mill. Today the town has a population of about 3,600. Each summer the town hosts an annual Corn Festival.
In December 2010, an EF2 Tornado touched down in Aumsville, destroying several homes and causing severe damage to several businesses and the City Hall. This was an unusual event as tornados are rare in the region with only a total of 114 known since 1887 with the Aumsville tornado being one of just four to reach EF2 status (An EF2 tornado has wind speeds of between 111 and 135 miles per hour).
The Person:
Amos Davis, of German-descent, was born in 1832 and was popularly known as "Aumus." He married Cornelia Ann Turner, the daughter of local mill owner Henry L. Turner, who founded the nearby town of Turner. When Aumus died in 1863 at just 31 years old, Henry Turner, who was quite fond of his son-in-law, named this community "Aumusville," which was eventually shortened to "Aumsville."
